And so, two of these plates, one from the North and one from the South, slowly began to move toward each other. Underwater, right where the plates crashed together, lived little underwater dragons — volcanoes! They breathed fire and threw hot lava and rocks out of the sea. At first, tiny islands peeked above the water, then they grew larger and larger, like inflating balloons. Slowly, over a very, very long time, these islands connected to one another, and the lava hardened into solid ground.
And finally, after millions of years, out of many islands and volcanic rock, the Isthmus of Panama was born — a very narrow strip of land that connected two massive continents and, like a living wall, divided the two great oceans! It was as if someone very carefully snapped two giant puzzle pieces together. What makes it so famous? This 'belt' became a vibrant green bridge for all living things!
